27 Years Later

In 1997, I put out a call to 550 mail artists for my first assemblage project. The topic was Transport, no rules, anything the sender defined as transport. The contributions came rolling in – 78 pieces from 65 mail artists. In early 1998, I stopped doing mail art, so all of those goodies sat in a plastic bin.

Transport Project Call 1997

Fast forward to 2023, Nonlocal mail art has returned. Out came that plastic bin, and what a treasure trove it turned out to be. Now-notable artists and some that are no longer with us sent contributions: Ed Higgins III, buZ blurr, Clemente Padin, Keith Bates, Giovanna Strada, Vittore Baroni, Crackerjack Kid, and many more. After thinking about the best way to display and share these pieces, I settled on a 8.5 x 11 book. Everything is carefully arranged so that everything is actual size – including 11 x 17 spreads. The piece ends with a section highlighting today’s Transport artist – Jack Lattemann of Cascadia Artpost – who’s kept the flame burning with his Ticket Ticket project.
