Art movements leading up to today’s mail art network have been driven by a manifesto. Dada, Lettrists, Nouveau Realists, Fluxus, and Neoists all had a beacon of light that drove the movement. Notably, Fluxus and Dada continue to inspire to mail art styles that illustrate their manifestos, though they are less taught or understood today. I’ve been thinking about the community that’s continued around mail art, a perpetually obscure art practice. How does it continue in the era of the social web and digital culture? Many of us are also seekers of other little-known art media – music, film, photography, writing – often to the point that we are not interested in much of commercial, mainstream culture. We like to seek out the secrets in the crevices. It’s time for a new manifesto for mail art artists to represent why we participate in correspondence art. To that end, inspired and patterned from the George Maciunas’ Fluxus Manifesto and the satiric humour of the Neoists, I’m happy to present the Crevicist Manifesto. It’s been simmering for about a year. The content is serious, yet with a wink and a nod. I encourage all to dive into those little known cultural gaps and share what you find with others. The Manifesto is below. Share it far and wide. Celebrate Crevicism!
